Weighted Grade Calculator

When a syllabus says tests count 50% and homework 20%, a plain average lies. Enter each score with its weight and this calculator produces the true weighted average — and tells you honestly if your weights do not yet add to 100%.

Formula

Multiply each grade by its weight, add, and divide by the total weight:
Weighted average = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ Weight

How to use this calculator

  1. Add a row per assignment or category.
  2. Enter the grade as a percentage and its syllabus weight.
  3. Press Calculate — if the weights do not total 100%, the result normalizes and the notes say so.

Worked example

Tests average 90% with a 40% weight; homework 80% with a 60% weight.

  1. 90 × 0.40 = 36; 80 × 0.60 = 48.
  2. Total: 36 + 48 = 84.

Result: The weighted grade is 84%, a B on the standard scale.

Frequently asked questions

My weights only add to 70%. Is the result wrong?

Not wrong — normalized. The calculator divides by the 70% you entered, effectively grading the work so far. The remaining 30% (often the final) can still move the grade substantially.

Should I enter points or percentages?

Percentages. If an assignment was 18/20, that is 90% — convert first, then apply its category weight.

What if a category has several assignments?

Average the assignments inside the category first (or as your syllabus specifies), then enter that category average as one row with the category weight.
