How to use this calculator
- Enter the numerator.
- Enter the denominator (it cannot be zero).
- Press Calculate for the reduced fraction, decimal and mixed number.
Worked example
Simplify 18/24.
- The GCF of 18 and 24 is 6.
- Divide both by 6: 18 ÷ 6 = 3, 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
Result: 18/24 simplifies to 3/4, which is 0.75 as a decimal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the GCF quickly?
List the factors of both numbers and take the largest shared one — or use our Factor Calculator. For big numbers, repeated division by common primes works well.
Can a fraction with a negative be simplified?
Yes — the sign is carried by the numerator, so −6/8 simplifies to −3/4. Two negatives cancel out entirely.
What is an improper fraction as a mixed number?
When the numerator is larger than the denominator, divide: 11/4 = 2¾. The whole part is the quotient and the remainder stays over the original denominator.
