Fraction Calculator

Fraction arithmetic has four different rule sets, and it is easy to apply the wrong one. Choose the operation, enter two fractions, and get the answer reduced to lowest terms — with the decimal and mixed-number equivalents included.

Formula

Different operations, different rules:
Add/Subtract: common denominator first · Multiply: straight across · Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply
Every result is then reduced by the greatest common factor.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the first fraction (numerator over denominator).
  2. Choose the operation.
  3. Enter the second fraction and press Calculate.

Worked example

Add 1/2 + 3/4.

  1. Common denominator 4: 1/2 = 2/4.
  2. Add: 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4.
  3. As a mixed number: 1¼, and as a decimal 1.25.

Result: 1/2 + 3/4 = 5/4 = 1¼.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I just add the denominators?

Denominators name the size of the pieces; adding them would change the piece size mid-problem. Only numerators (counts of pieces) are added, after the pieces are made the same size.

Why does division flip the second fraction?

Dividing by a fraction asks “how many of these fit?” — which is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. The flip is not a trick; it is what the question means.

How are mixed numbers handled?

Enter whole numbers in the numerator to simulate them (for example 3/2 for 1½), and read the mixed-number form from the results.
