Long Division Calculator
Long division produces two answers at once: how many times the divisor fits (the quotient) and what is left over (the remainder). Enter the dividend and divisor to get both, plus the exact decimal value for comparison.

Formula
How to use this calculator
- Enter the dividend — the number being split up.
- Enter the divisor — it cannot be zero.
- Press Calculate for the quotient, remainder and decimal.
Worked example
Divide 145 by 12.
- 12 fits into 145 twelve times: 12 × 12 = 144.
- Remainder: 145 − 144 = 1.
- Decimal: 145 ÷ 12 ≈ 12.0833.
Result: 145 ÷ 12 = 12 remainder 1.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a remainder into a decimal?
Keep dividing: the remainder becomes tenths, hundredths and so on. 1 remainder after dividing by 12 becomes 1/12 ≈ 0.0833, which is why the decimal result is 12.0833.
Why can’t I divide by zero?
Division asks “how many groups of this size?” — groups of size zero can never add up to the dividend, so the question has no answer. Calculators and algebra both treat it as undefined.
What if the divisor is larger than the dividend?
The quotient is 0 and the remainder is the dividend itself (for whole numbers); the decimal result is a proper fraction between 0 and 1.
