SHSAT Score Calculator

New York’s SHSAT converts raw ELA and Math results into scaled section scores that sum to a total used for specialized high school offers. Enter correct answers per section (57 scored questions each) for a rough scaled estimate.

Results

Assumptions: ESTIMATE: linear approximation. Official SHSAT scaling is equated per administration by the NYC DOE and is not linear; do not use this for admissions decisions.

Formula

This estimator maps each section linearly onto its scaled range:
Section ≈ 200 + (Correct ÷ 57) × 200  ·  Total = ELA + Math
The real scaling is equated and non-linear — high raw scores gain disproportionately — so read the note.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your correct answers for ELA (57 scored questions).
  2. Enter your correct answers for Math (57 scored questions).
  3. Press Calculate for the estimated scaled total.

Worked example

ELA 40 of 57 and Math 45 of 57 correct.

  1. ELA: 200 + (40 ÷ 57) × 200 ≈ 340.
  2. Math: 200 + (45 ÷ 57) × 200 ≈ 358.

Result: Estimated total: about 698 on the linear approximation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the real SHSAT score different?

The NYC DOE equates each administration so scores are comparable across forms, and the conversion rewards top raw performance non-linearly. Cutoffs for schools like Stuyvesant have recently been in the mid-500s to high-500s in scaled terms on the official (non-linear) scale.

What are the field-test questions?

Each section contains unscored experimental questions mixed in (the sections present more questions than the 57 that count). You cannot tell which are which, so treat every question as scored.

Grade 8 vs Grade 9 SHSAT — same calculator?

The section structure is the same, but the 9th-grade test covers more advanced math content and competes for far fewer seats. The scaling estimate works the same way for both.
