Frequently asked questions

Is “5 grams = 1 teaspoon” true?

Only for water (4.93 g) and ingredients close to its density. For flour it is off by nearly 2×, and for honey it understates by 40%. Always convert by ingredient.

Level, rounded or heaped teaspoon?

Recipes and these reference weights mean a level teaspoon — fill and scrape flat. A heaped spoon can hold 50–100% more.

US teaspoon vs metric teaspoon?

Nearly identical: the US teaspoon is 4.92892 mL and the metric teaspoon is 5 mL. The difference (about 1.4%) is smaller than ingredient variation.
