Cat Age Calculator

“Multiply by seven” is wrong for cats — they race through childhood, then age slowly. Enter your cat’s age in years or months to get the human-years equivalent under the standard veterinary model, plus the life stage vets use.

Formula

The veterinary model front-loads maturity:
Year 1 ≈ 15 human years · Year 2 adds ≈ 9 (total 24) · Each later year adds ≈ 4
A 5-year-old cat is thus about 36 in human terms, not 35 by the mythical ×7 rule — close there, wildly off for kittens.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose years or months.
  2. Enter your cat’s age.
  3. Press Calculate for the human-years equivalent and life stage.

Worked example

A 5-year-old cat.

  1. First year: 15; second year: +9 → 24.
  2. Three more years: 3 × 4 = 12.
  3. Total: 24 + 12 = 36.

Result: The cat is about 36 in human years — solidly in the Prime life stage.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the first year worth 15?

Cats reach sexual maturity and near-adult size within their first year — development comparable to a mid-teenage human. The second year completes physical and behavioral maturity.

Do indoor and outdoor cats age differently?

The model is an average. Outdoor cats face more risks and often have shorter lifespans; breed matters too (some breeds are long-lived). Your vet’s judgment for your specific cat beats any chart.

When is a cat considered a senior?

Veterinary life stages put Senior at about 11–14 years and Geriatric at 15+. Senior cats benefit from twice-yearly vet checks.
