Torque Converter

Torque specs cross unit systems constantly — a German manual in Nm, an American wrench in ft-lb. Convert between newton-meters, foot-pounds, inch-pounds and kilogram-centimeters with the exact standard factors.

Formula

Torque factors follow from the exact pound and inch definitions:
1 ft-lb = 1.35582 Nm · 1 in-lb = 0.112985 Nm · 1 kgf·cm = 0.0980665 Nm

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the torque value.
  2. Choose the unit in the spec and the unit on your wrench.
  3. Press Calculate and set the wrench to the converted value.

Worked example

Convert 100 Nm to foot-pounds.

  1. 100 ÷ 1.35582 ≈ 73.756.

Result: 100 Nm is about 73.76 ft-lb.

Frequently asked questions

Is torque the same as energy?

The units look alike (a newton-meter is dimensionally a joule), but torque is a rotational force — a vector — and is not energy. Engineers keep the names separate for exactly this reason.

Why do some specs use in-lb instead of ft-lb?

Small fasteners need finer resolution: 89 in-lb is easier to set accurately than 7.4 ft-lb. As a rule, in-lb covers small hardware; ft-lb covers automotive and structural work.

How accurate must a torque conversion be?

Convert exactly, then set the wrench to the nearest mark. Typical click wrenches are ±3–4% accurate, so chasing decimals beyond the wrench’s precision adds nothing.
