Rent Split Calculator

Equal splits are simple, but not always fair — incomes differ and so do bedrooms. This calculator divides the rent two ways: evenly, or in proportion to numbers you supply (income, room size, or your own fairness weights). Add one row per person.

Formula

A weighted split gives each person the same fraction of the rent as their fraction of the total weight:
Share = Total rent × (Your weight ÷ Sum of all weights)
With equal weights this reduces to rent ÷ people.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the total monthly rent.
  2. Choose equal or weighted splitting.
  3. Add a row for each person; for weighted splits, enter incomes (or room sizes), then Calculate.

Worked example

Two roommates earning $50,000 and $75,000 split $1,800, weighted by income.

  1. Total income: $125,000.
  2. Shares: 50/125 = 40% → $720; 75/125 = 60% → $1,080.

Result: The lower earner pays $720 and the higher earner pays $1,080 — the same 40/60 proportion as their incomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is splitting by income actually fair?

It equalizes the burden: each person gives up the same percentage of income. Many roommates prefer it when incomes differ a lot; others prefer equal shares or room-size based splits. This tool supports all three.

How do I split by room size?

Choose the weighted method and enter each bedroom’s square footage as the weight. Shared spaces are the usual sticking point — some households weight private rooms only.

Should utilities split the same way?

Often yes for shared utilities, but usage-based items (like a parking spot only one person uses) are usually assigned to that person directly.
