Frequently asked questions
Is the mean the same as the average?
In everyday use, yes — “average” almost always means the arithmetic mean. Statistics also uses median and mode, which answer slightly different questions.
When is the mean misleading?
When the data has extreme outliers — one very large value can pull the mean far from the typical value. In those cases the median is often more representative.
Can the mean be a value that is not in the data?
Yes, and usually it is. The mean is a balance point, not necessarily an observed value.
