Gold Value Calculator

The melt value of gold is pure arithmetic: weight × purity × the spot price. Choose your unit (grams, troy ounces, pennyweight or tola) and karat (24k down to 10k), enter the current spot price per troy ounce, and get the intrinsic metal value.

Formula

Karat is a 24-part purity scale, and precious metals are priced by the troy ounce (31.1035 g):
Melt value = Weight in grams × (Karat ÷ 24) ÷ 31.1035 × Spot price

How to use this calculator

  1. Weigh the item and choose its unit.
  2. Select the karat — it is usually stamped on jewelry (585 = 14k, 750 = 18k, 916 = 22k).
  3. Enter today’s spot price per troy ounce, then Calculate.

Worked example

10 grams of 24k gold with spot at $2,600 per troy ounce.

  1. Pure gold: 10 g (24k is effectively pure).
  2. In troy ounces: 10 ÷ 31.1035 ≈ 0.3215.
  3. Value: 0.3215 × 2,600 ≈ $835.92.

Result: The melt value is about $835.92.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the troy ounce different from a regular ounce?

Precious metals use the troy ounce (31.1035 g); kitchen ounces are avoirdupois (28.3495 g). Mixing them up overstates or understates value by about 10%.

Will a buyer pay me the melt value?

Usually a bit less — dealers and refineries take a percentage for processing and margin. Collectible coins and fine jewelry can also sell above melt for craftsmanship or rarity.

How do I read a karat stamp like “750”?

It is purity in thousandths: 750 means 75% gold = 18k. 585 is 14k, 417 is 10k, 916 is 22k and 999 is fine gold.
