Gallons to Pounds Converter

A gallon is volume; a pound is weight — the bridge is the liquid’s density, and it differs a lot: a gallon of gasoline weighs about 6.15 lb while a gallon of honey weighs 12. Choose the liquid and convert either direction.

Formula

One multiplication by the liquid’s weight per gallon:
Pounds = Gallons × lb-per-gallon for that liquid
Water’s famous figure — 8.345 lb/gal at room temperature — is the exception people wrongly apply to everything.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the direction.
  2. Enter the amount and select the liquid.
  3. Press Calculate — the density used is stated with the result.

Result: 5 gallons of water weigh about 41.73 pounds (plus the container).

Frequently asked questions

Why is gasoline’s figure marked approximate?

Gasoline density genuinely varies with blend, ethanol content and temperature — published values span roughly 5.9–6.4 lb/gal. The 6.15 figure is a reasonable planning middle, not a constant of nature.

Does “a pint’s a pound the world around” hold?

Only for water (a US pint of water is about 1.04 lb, close enough for the rhyme). For honey a pint is about 1.5 lb; for gasoline, about 0.77 lb.

US or imperial gallons?

US liquid gallons throughout this converter. An imperial gallon is about 20% larger (4.546 L vs 3.785 L), so the distinction matters.
